The Nova Scotia SPCA is launching early bird registration for the highly anticipated 2nd Annual Animal Wellness Conference on April 1, 2012. The Animal Wellness Conference is geared toward those who express an interest in learning more about animal wellness and welfare. As the host, the Nova Scotia SPCA welcomes the general public, animal welfare groups, students, the veterinary community and volunteers in communities across the province to the Nova Scotia Community College Waterfront Campus for the ultimate animal educational experience on June 22 and 23.
The two-day conference will be offering workshop sessions on: companion animal health, shelter medicine and management, dog training and behaviour, the promotion of adoption, wildlife rehabilitation, the Nova Scotia SPCA’s No Kill model and much more. This year, the conference is expected to host more than 700 conference delegates along with a full trade show experience devoted to our furry companions’ well-being.
The first Annual Animal Wellness Conference held in 2011 marked the first event of its kind in Atlantic Canada and proved to be a colossal success. It’s expected this year’s conference will boast the same high calibre and comprehensive educational experiences as the past year, along with a few exciting additions.
Mark Hagen, vice president of Nutrition and Manufacturing at Hagen Pet Products, will be joining the conference as a speaker, lecturing on the history of parrot importation into Canada and how Hagen is now at the forefront of captive breeding and care education in Canada. This new addition has proved to be an exciting one as Mark will be the first speaker in the conference’s existence with an aviary focus.
Kit Jenkins, program manager for PetSmart Charities of Canada, has more than 25 years of experience in the animal sheltering world, focusing on animal behaviour, educating for all ages and peer training. She’ll be speaking about people skills for animal welfare and how people can reduce stress for pets in shelters and foster homes. Cst. Brian Veniot, who possesses 25 years in the field with the RCMP and is currently paired with canine companion Phalen, is presenting on the use of animals to protect civilian safety.
The Animal Wellness Conference is presented this year by PetFocus Inc.(www.petfocus.ca) , a group of seven veterinary practices in HRM partnering to create a total health care solution for pet owners. There will be speakers from these veterinary practices sharing their expertise and knowledge on many topics as it relates to companion animal health. There are too many speakers to mention all, each excellent and experts in their field.
