Marc Sauvé says it is all about having fun.
“It’s certainly been a lot of laughs,” smiles the Halifax-based jokester, who hosts an evening of comedy each Wednesday at the Rodeo Lounge on Ilsley Avenue in Burnside.
“We started this show over the summer and the response has been excellent so far,” he adds. “Much better than I had hoped for actually.”
Sauvé, who is originally from Montreal and performs regularly across Atlantic Canada, notes that the east coast comedy scene has grown significantly in recent years.
“We get a lot of big names coming through here pretty regularly these days and that has helped to inspire a good crop of young, home-grown talent right across the region.”
As the owner of Yuk-Yuks Comedy clubs in both Halifax and Moncton, the young stand-up has made acquaintances with many of those aspiring humourists.
“It isn’t difficult to put together a really strong line-up at the Rodeo each week. The talent is well above average and the wings and beer do the rest. For four dollars you aren’t going to find better entertainment value in the city.”
The performances have been averaging between 100-125 attendees each week.
“The place has been packed since it started,” says Rodeo owner Carla Balsor. “Our regulars have been coming in, but we’ve been seeing a lot of new people also. Everyone just loves it.”
Sauvé expects those numbers to climb even higher over the coming months.
“Summers are traditionally slow in the comedy business because there’s so much going on elsewhere. Things are really picking up right about now.
“I’m not sure how many more people we can fit into this place,” he laughs, “but if this keeps up, then the next few months are going to be extremely busy and a lot of fun.”
