The Greater Burnside Business Association's annual summer barbecue at the Park Place Ramada, in addition to great food and perfectly grilled steaks, featured both Mayor Peter Kelly and newly minted Member of the Legislative Assembly, Andrew Younger.

Both politicians brought a similar message to the Association's gathered membership.

Kelly, a strong supporter of the organization since it began, pointed out how far the GBBA's efforts have come to date and the many ways it continues to improve the business life of Burnside. He points to the progress made on linking the Park to the Dartmouth Crossing development, the Burnside Expressway and improved sidewalks as examples of what the Association has achieved so far.

He also announced the tender has gone out for the pedestrian overpass across Highway 111, another project he credits the GBBA with pushing unto the municipal agenda.

"Your voice is being heard," Kelly says. "Things are happening, so job well done! Keep up the good work."

Younger also singled out the work of the GBBA as important to the ongoing development of the region's largest business park.

"The residential project put forward by Dartmouth Crossing still has to go through a development agreement and we will need the GBBA to involved in that process," Younger says. Switching hats quickly to his new provincial role, Younger added, "The Burnside Expressway will remain a number one priority. We can't keep using Magazine Hill - it's limiting the industrial expansion of Burnside."

The GBBA's Chair, Nancy Sweeney, says she is encouraged to see the organization is having a real impact at the municipal level and she hopes to keep up pressure as the group pushes for other items on its wish list, such as improved transit service. However, Sweeney isn't just calling on the politicians to make this happen. She also wants more residents of Burnside to take up the fight.

"We can't do it alone. We need your help," Sweeney told those in attendance at the barbecue. "We invite you to let us know what you're interested in helping to improve and then joining one of our committees to assist in making that improvement happen."
