Looking for something a little different for lunch? Tired of burgers and pizza? Well Burnside residents will have a new option later this month when Mezza Lebanese Kitchen opens its doors at 16 Garland Ave., just down from Cora's.
The new location is the latest in the Mezza Lebanese Restaurant Group, which includes the flagship restaurant on Quinpool Road and two Venus Pizza locations – which will also soon be rebranded under the Mezza name.
The emphasis in the Burnside location will be on serving fast but healthy food alternatives. Menu selections will include pita sandwiches, dips, salads, stuffed grape leaves, falafel and shawarma, many of which will be available to use in design-your-own combo platters. The location will feature an open kitchen design with seating for about 40 customers. Catering services will also be available.
"Everything will be handmade from local, fresh ingredients," says Mezza's Manager Stephanie Burry. "We're going to keep that tradition going – people seem to love it here (at the Quinpool location). Our motto is 'Healthy can taste good too.'"
The Burnside location will take a few other cues from the Quinpool, as well. It will feature the same colour palette as the flagship location, as well as a drop ceiling that mirrors the carved wooden ceiling found on Quinpool. Large posters will also help Burnside capture some of the murals painted on the walls in the main restaurant.
Borrowed elements won't be restricted to the décor. The $5 to $15 range of menu items will include generous portions, because Burry says they "don't like people leaving hungry."
The Mezza Group is run by brothers Tony and Peter Nahas and had its origin with their father, Elias, who started by taking over the former Tony's Donair location in the Halifax Shopping Centre and renaming it Venus. It was soon followed by a second location on Barrington Street and eventually the family opened Mezza on Quinpool Road to offer healthy local Lebanese cuisine.
